What schedule analysis examines
A schedule is a planning and control record, not a complete explanation of a project. Schedule analysis looks at the dates, relationships, milestones, updates, and changes in that record so project professionals can ask better questions about progress and coordination.
The appropriate method, level of detail, and conclusions depend on the project, the schedule quality, available records, and the purpose of the review. This article is educational information, not legal scheduling advice or a substitute for professional analysis.
Baseline schedules and schedule updates
A baseline schedule generally represents an approved or reference plan for the work at a point in time. Later updates record reported progress, revised dates, logic changes, new activities, or other changes made as the project develops.
Comparing a baseline with updates—or comparing updates with one another—can reveal movement. It does not, by itself, establish why a date moved, who is responsible, or what a project should do next.
Terms commonly discussed in a review
Milestones
Milestones are significant dates or events used to track key points in the project plan. Their meaning depends on how the schedule is built and used.
Critical path
At a high level, the critical path is the sequence of activities that drives the calculated project completion date in a particular schedule update. It can change as progress and schedule logic change.
Variance
Variance is a difference between planned, prior, or updated schedule information. A variance is an observation that needs context; it is not automatically a conclusion about delay or responsibility.
Progress
Reported progress reflects what the schedule update says about activity status. Reviewers should consider whether the schedule record and supporting project information tell a consistent story.
Why context matters
A finish-date movement, float change, or logic revision may warrant review, but the schedule alone may not show the circumstances behind it. Field observations, contemporaneous documents, coordination records, and the people responsible for the work can provide needed context.
That is why automated comparisons should be treated as a way to surface observations for review, not as an independent determination of project cause, delay, entitlement, or professional responsibility.

Primavera P6 is a scheduling platform commonly used on complex construction projects. When a project uses P6, schedule information may be exchanged in formats such as XER files. The quality and usefulness of any review still depend on the schedule data, update practices, and project context.
